Beauty Pageant Judge?

I had the opportunity to judge a beauty pageant this past Saturday.  I knew that my wife had been asked to judge and I planned on going anyway.  My usual role at these (and most other events) is as a photographer.  I got a call on Friday night about 5pm and they had a judge that was ill and needed a fill in.
Pride of Montpelier Pageant
Having a wife that was the state director for a pageant and having been a pageant parent they figured I was up to the job.  I agreed and was emailed the bio sheets and photos to judge photogenic.  I had my wife drive for a few hours on the way to OH so I could go over the information and judging sheet.  I must admit that being a pageant judge was a little more difficult than I thought.  I’ve sat in the audience for many pageants and scratched my head wondering why some of my picks were not in the top 10 or top 5.  I now have a little more insight into the judging process and I’m sure there were people in attendance that night who were judging the judging, just as I have done on many occasions.

The Pride of Montpelier Pageant was a very organized pageant and it was difficult to make a final decision.  The contestants were all great and I wanted all of them to get a prize.  In the end there is only one winner per category.  I have read it and heard it but ultimately the interview really does make or break a contestant.  So next time I’m sitting in the audience and want to criticise the judges I will have to think twice because I don’t know what happened in the hours before when they were meeting with the contestants.

Zombies in Old Town Saginaw

As part of the 2009 Lawn Chair Film Festival it was zombie night in Saginaw!  Last night the film festival was showing Shawn of the Dead and the night featured a zombie costume contest.  There were some great costumes and incredible make-up jobs.  One zombie had a pipe sticking out of his chest that dripped blood.

The night was a lot of fun and aside from about 5-10 minutes of light rain the movie weather was great!

Wedding Cake

Every wedding that I photograph has unique and interesting wedding cakes.  I’m going to start posting some here.  If I find out who made the cake I will post it, but in most cases I don’t know the cake designer.

This picture was taken at the Double Tree Inn in Bay City Michigan. Wedding photography was done by Image Artz.

360 Main St

I stumbled upon (not using stumbleupon) an interesting blog today. Not sure exactly how I got to it but 360mainstreet.com is a well written and very interesting blog.  There are not many articles yet but the resumes of the contributors look impressive.  This blog will be on my RSS feed and I look forward to good things from them!

Sunday Wedding

It’s not very often that there is a Sunday wedding, but this past weekend there was one. Working for Image Artz Photography I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at the Double Tree Inn in Bay City, MI. This was an outdoor wedding and the weather was perfect.

Wedding in Bay City

The Double Tree is right next to a beautiful park in Downtown Bay City and we were able to get some great pictures of the bride and groom.

No Picture Weekend

I kind of took the weekend off and didn’t shoot a single frame.  It was the 4th of July weekend and I just had a lot of other things to do.  It was a little strage to leave the camera bag at home and not shoot a single frame.  I have to admit that I did some editing a clean-up work on Sunday.  My wife will be attending the 2009 Galaxy Pageant Nationals this week and I had to get some images on a disc for a magazine article she wrote.  I had the Michigan Galaxy images on 2 different hard drives and in 4 different folders.  Not a good organizational plan.  So I had to make room on one hard drive and move all the 2009 Michigan Galaxy pictures to one place, find the best few images that would work for the article and burn a disc.  This got me in the archive mode and I cleaned up 2 hard drives and archived a bunch of images that were over 2 years old.

2009 Miss Michigan Galaxy

After doing a little hard drive cleaning I remembered that Crazy Jack’s Custom Cycles needed the images that were taken last week for an article submission on Monday.  I quick edited the images and emailed off the best ones to owner Jason Pries.

Senior Pictures

I had a senior portrait session last week.  This week has been so hectic I just got around to editing a few of the images.
This picture was taken in Old Saginaw City with some fresh graffiti that had not been completely defiled yet.

(side note) I really hate it when someone takes the time to create a great piece of street art and then some punk tagger ruins it.

Not all the pictures were done with graffiti in the background but I really liked this one. We did some in the studio, on the railroad tracks, at a loading dock and against a building that was built in the 20’s and had some great art features.

Live in the Saginaw, MI area and need quality senior pictures without spending a fortune? Look me up – http://defoephotography.com

Crazy Jack’s Custom Cycles

Met with Jason last night at the Crazyjack Industries location in Bridgeport, MI. I met the bike building crew and we snapped a few pictures. Are these guys crazy? Most of them are!

The bikes they build are great and I look forward to working with them more in the future.

2009 Dow River Roar

The wife and I spent the weekend in Bay City working at the Dow River Roar.  On Saturday my wife had the Michigan Galaxy Queens down at the river helping kids in the Kroger Kids Zone.  I spent the weekend running around and snapping pictures.

I’ll keep posting more as the time to edit permits.  Images will also be posted on the River Roar website.

Crazy Jack’s Custom

I had the pleasure of speaking with Jason from Crazy Jack’s Custom bike shop in Birch Run Michigan.  This guy is motiviated and it will be interesting to watch what he does in the next few months.  At this point I’m not able to give a lot of details but check out the videos at:
