Every once and a while I like to go through the external hard drives and see what files I forgot to edit or use some improved techniques to fix an older image. A lot of the images that I revisit are concert images. Most concerts are indoors and they always seem to flood the stage with red light. It is hard enough to get a good camera setting in a low light setting where the subject is always moving but add that 90% of the time the stage is washed in red – it makes it tough.
I was looking at an image of Haley, the lead singer of Paramore, that was shot at iso 1200 and it was pretty grainy. I figured it would be shrunk down and used as a low res image on a website. So I opened the image in Photoshop
did a little bit of cropping and realized that I should run it through some noise elimination software. I have used Noise Ninja
and Neat Image. Both programs are great it just seems that whatever one you get used to using is the one you use the most.
I’m a fan of real looking pictures. I like a little imperfection – that is the way life is. My goal in using noise software is to make the image a little cleaner and not over-soften the image or skin. Below is an example where the noise was removed but there are still imperfections in the image. The image turned out ok and was able to be saved as a high-res. I like life with some edges – kind of like rock-n-roll!
