Just Ask

I look in magazines and see great pictures all the time with really cool locations.  I’ve been part of group shoots where the organizer paid big money for a location and enjoyed the ability to be part of the shoot for a low cost.  How do photographers that are starting out get the budget to shoot at great locations?  This weekend was a great example of just how easy it can be.  We had a model coming to the studio for some portfolio work (no pictures to post yet because I haven’t edited any).  The weather was not good enough to go outside but we didn’t want all studio shots.  My wife decided to pick up the phone and call a resturant, Fuzzy’s, that has an old time dinner feel.  She spoke with the owner, explained that we needed a place to shoot a few pictures and through their diner was a perfect location.  The owner was pleased that we though highly of their interior and was happy to let us use the place for free as long as they were not busy.  We spent a few hours shooting and I offered the owners an 8×10 for free when the pictures are done.  The solution to getting a great location is easy – just ask!
