In my photography class there was a section on photographing for texture. The basic concept is that the main light needs to be a 90 deg angle. This will make shadows in the bumps and make the pictures more 3 dimensional.
I was taking pictures of some jewelry this weekend and remembered this technique. The main light was set at a 90 deg angle to the side and parallel with the object. The fill light was set 45 deg of the object and set up high pointing down.
This simple technique works well!
